## Choosing a backsplash

Classic subway tile in a running bond is hard to beat. Stacked vertical tile reads more modern. Large-format porcelain or a slab-look tile gives you an almost seamless wall with very little grout to clean behind the stove. Handmade-look and glossy tile catch the light under the cabinets.

## Layout is what makes it look right

A backsplash is right at eye level, so every cut shows. Before any tile goes up, we work out where the pattern centres (usually on the range or the sink), where it stops, and how it meets the window trim and the ends of the upper cabinets. The goal is full tiles where you look most and no thin slivers anywhere.

## Backsplashes: common questions

### How long does a backsplash take to install?

It is one of the quicker tile jobs. Setting the tile and grouting it are done on separate days so the mortar can cure, and you get a firm schedule with your quote.

### Do my countertops or cabinets need to come out?

No. A backsplash goes in between the counter and the upper cabinets with everything in place. We protect the counters while we work.

### What happens to the outlets?

The cover plates come off and the tile is cut around each box. If the new tile is thick enough that the outlets would sit too deep, they need to be brought forward so the covers sit flat on the finished tile.

### Can you tile a feature wall in a bathroom or living room?

Yes. Feature walls behind a vanity, a bed, a tub or a fireplace are tiled the same way as a backsplash, with the layout planned around the focal point.
